The festival serves as a kickoff for summer at South Carolina's Grand Strand, the stretch of beaches along the coast of the Carolinas. The Grand Strand is over 60 miles of uninterrupted beaches. The Sun Fun Festival is made up of all sorts of events, including contests, pageants, celebrity meet and greets, and tournaments. Some of the tournaments include the annual 3 on 3 Streetball Classic presented by the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, as well as the annual National Sea Doo Surf and Turf Jet Ski Racing Championship. Visitors can also see professional sand sculpture contests, watch air shows and parades, and enjoy a barbeque competition.
One of the highlights of the Sun Fun Festival is the Miss Sun Fun and Miss Sun Fun Teen pageants. The pageant queens travel around the area to festivals, trade shows, legislative events, regional and international promotions, and local festivities. Their job is to let others know all about the Myrtle Beach area and answer questions about the Grand Strand area. The pageant serves as a preliminary to the Miss South Carolina USA and Miss South Carolina Teen USA pageants.
