Located north of Charleston and south of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Pawleys Island is considered one of the oldest "arrogantly shabby" summer resorts on the East Coast, with its Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Arts now holding its 19th annual 2008 festival. It is in this gentle aristocratic setting that the Festival began in 1991 with a one-program event—a tribute to Mozart on his bicentennial.
The Island of Pawleys was settled in the early 1700s by the families of nearby plantation rice planters, when every May the families would leave the unhealthy malaria-filled rivers of theirhomes to stay at Pawleys Island until the November frost when the air was cleaner. Twelve original residences exist from those early days on Pawleys Island, still maintaining its gentle atmosphere of days gone by—where being completely shoeless, feeling carefree, was totally normal in a world that is still laid back and utterly peaceful.
Now holding up to 1,200 people within the Brookgreen Gardens which were once part of the area's historical plantations, every year a tribute is paid to an area established in 1931 by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington. Originally established to preserve the area's native flora and fauna, the Brookgreen Gardens display the world's most extensive collection of figurative sculpture by worldwide American artists. Today the music of the Pawleys Island Festival promotes African-American sacred music so important to the local area, with choral performancese historically annually showcased due to its rich tradition--all combined with the largest group of quality artists in the beautiful historical Broogreen Gardens. A wonderful event that not only celebrates the areas's history but the culture of the land.
