The Chanticleer is the mascot of Coastal Carolina University. The school is located in Conway, South Carolina just west of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The school is host to about 8,300 students. It has branch campuses in Litchfield and North Myrtle Beach.
The Chanticleers are the athletic teams associated with Coastal Carolina University. The mascot, the chanticleer, often gets attention because many people have never heard of the chanticleer and have no idea what it may be. The Chanticleer comes from Geoffrey Chaucer’s “Nun’s Priest Tale” from the epic Canterbury Tales. He is a dominating rooster who rules the barnyard in the tale. Coastal Carolina University saw this as a fitting mascot for their team that they have high hopes for dominating their opponents.
Coastal Carolina University competes in a variety of both men’s and women’s sports. Men’s athletics include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, track and field, soccer and tennis. Women’s athletics include basketball, cross country, golf, track and field, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. The team’s colors are bronze, black and teal. Their main basketball arena is called Kimbel Arena. Their football stadium is Brooks Stadium, and their baseball stadium is Charles Watson Stadium. The school is part of the Big South Conference.
The University has only had a football program since 2003, but they have a great record. The Baseball team is considered the most consistently successful program, and they boast and excellent record each year. Many players from the university’s soccer program have played on professional soccer teams, among them Joseph Ngwenya, Kheli Dube, and Jordan Hughes.
